Psychological assessment
An independent professional assessment by a seasoned occupational and coaching psychologist is, more often than not, an encouraging experience for a person whose life involves managing one or more disabilities. For it puts the individual's limitations in the perspective not only of relevant groups of 'normal' people, but also of the strengths the person has developed and tends to rather take for granted.
In conducting a psychological assessment, we choose normative data relevant to the history of the individual. We also select tasks that can allow him or her to find expression for abilities that many others simply overlook and that may not be related to the academic performance of the person involved.
Evaluating your strategy for managing a disability
Whether a limitation at birth or acquired, a disability tends to limit the range of a person's performance physically or mentally. But only to a degree. And when the full range of possible human accomplishments is considered, the limitation is usually relative rather than absolute: in other words, the person with a disability doesn't carry out some functions as well as others but may well make up for such underperformance, perhaps in ways that can be easily overlooked.
Individuals, families, groups and organisations benefit from adopting balance and perspective in their assessment of the actual impact of a disability, so that appropriate learning can be designed and feasible adjustments can be negotiated and put to work day-to-day.
Coaching - presentation, negotiation and memory management
Perhaps more than most people, a person with disability faces a particular challenge to get the balance right between being assertive and appropriately proud of accomplishments, on the one hand, and acknowledging impairments that can to some extent restrict what he or she can do. Using audio or video tapes, we provide the individual with constructive feedback about the person's approach to self-presentation as well as to negotiating about terms and conditions of working.
Some clients suffer from memory deficits, whether due to an accident or natural causes. We coach them in ways of customising and using a host of methods of memory management so that any difficulties are contained and no longer allowed to allow a difficult situation get out of hand, due to anxiety or stress.
